Imagine a precisely blended concoction of tight irresistible grooves, chunk fueled bouncy beats, luscious brooding soundscapes, and a bowl of scrumptious glitch. Welcome to the musical world of Opiuo.
Sick Cycle, or Michael West and Levon Maeder, are engineers of mechanical bass orientated noise. Primarily creating excessively heavy glitchy dubstep and headache inducing drum and bass, Sick Cycle precisely twist every sound in their own unique way.
Well, as you may or may not know, our hometown, Christchurch, New Zealand was rocked (in a bad way) by a 7.1 scale earthquake. It was intense to say the least and all of the deliciouscrew based here are safe 'n' sound. Amazingly, there were no reported fatalities and our city is now in lockdown. Our Wednesday show might be going on hold for a few weeks while we clean up our city.
To everyone in Christchurch, stay good, stay safe.
After many years of writing downbeat and ambient under the alias "Invader Tron," Andrew Snook has finally taken the definitive step away from the lounge, and onto the dance floor with his new LiveTek Project Nørt, and has now released his Debut EP “ZeroOne.”
Churning out minimal and progressive style bangin techno, with influences from his ambient glitch days seeping in, the result is both atmospheric and pumping, where ethereal melody lines and drifting synths are boiled down, vaporized, and pumped out the vents, of his mechanical tek driven, steam machine.
“ZeroOne,” is the first step in this exciting new project, with already, a raft of finely tuned tracks following closely behind, and a rocking live set ready just waiting to kick it.
To celebrate the start of Spring here in NZ, and the imminent arrival of the outdoor good weather madness, we have gusts Adelle and Spoonhead up on the show tonight! Yeah - a little about them:
(Sonja Adelle Loader-Jurac) is a female DJ from Christchurch, New Zealand. From the age of 17 she started playing tunes of the hard dance and hardstyle variety playing her first set in Wellington.
Now at the age of 21 Adelle has played a spread of genre’s including breaks, house, psy trance, techno and played to a range of different audience from All-age gigs, outdoor parties, regular club nights and special events and functions. With all these influences combined Adelle plays and eclectic mix of Electro keeping her sets fresh and full of energy.
Adelle - Her sound contains wobbly basslines, big breakdowns, fidgety beats and dance floor fun. With a big enough tune selection to suit all hours of the day and night Adelle plays electro that ranges from progressive to full on party beats that get a little grimey.
Her four years immersed in the dance scene have seen her play for crews such as Nitrate, Rinsed, Massive, R-ONE, Matrix Crew and playing support for DJ Weaver, Storm, Luna-C, Dom Sweeden, Jody6 and more.
Previous projects of Adelle have included hosting a show on Wellington based Munt FM and running a party night called “Electopia” an electro house and breaks night.
Adelle currently hosts a show on Pulzar FM 105.7 with friend and regular DJ partner Anikin Friday nights 10pm-1am and holds a residency at Double Drop/Double Happy Friday nights. Adelle also works as a freelance Graphic and Web Designer with a heavy music orientation for her design work. Keeping her life full of creativity and music gives her inspiration and unique take on her DJ-ing.
Ray Singer , more commonly known as 'Spoonhead' is a producer and live act of the 'electronic music' family. Best described as a cross-breed of reptile and mammal, crossing genres from Progressive into Breaks, Psy, Glitch and Dark Minimal. Spoonhead is known for his noisy, unusual call, different for each individual, that combines bellbird-like notes with clicks, cackles, timber-like creaks and groans, layered over heavy pulsating bass sounds and tight kick drums—the unusual possession of 2 voiceboxes enables Spoonhead to perform such a myriad of vocalisations[citation needed].
Some of the huge range of Spoonhead's sounds are beyond the human register. Watching a Spoonhead set, one can observe gaps in the sound when his beak is agape and throat tufts throbbing. Spoonhead will play at night, especially around the full moon period through sunrise into the daylight hours.
Behaviour:
Spoonhead is a creature most suited to the morning environment. Emerging sometime during the blue hour when things start getting a little strange and monsters are often caught fleeing from the dancefloor to hide in tents or under small rocky outcrops. He can be spotted spinning around in circles for hours on the dance floor with his hoola hoop or stretchy poi.
He spends many long hours alone recording his call and tweeking it to perfection. Always striving to make it tighter, deeper and more entrancing.
His lifestyle involves among many other things: growing organic food and storing it to survive the cold southern winters. Skating (tom kemps mini!), Riding (pow!), Surfing (at sunrise!) and Kiting (the might NorEasterly) with his mates. Designing & making clothing for other creatures that exist in the same habitat (www.morphic.co.nz). Making loud music with big beats or just quietly playing the native american flute. He enjoys sharing time with other interesting creatures especially of the reptile family although he does occassionally associate with humans.
Habitat
Typically the southern coastal shoreline of Pegaus Bay, Aotearoa. Sometimes Spoonhead will migrate during the seasons to other destinations where the music is fresh, the barrels are spitting and good times are pumping!
How to spot this creature:
First off you need to locate the most likely gig, venue or party that Spoonhead will be playing. A bit of research can never go amiss. Next you must be stealthly quiet because: Although Spoonhead is a producer, he is careful of his hearing and often wears strange fungal-like, bright orange earplugs on the dancefloor. HE HAS THE HEARING OF A BAT. This means he will hear you if you sneak up on him. He might either: Run and hide, attack with much ferocity or the most likely... introduce himself politely and continue dancing. You are therefore better of to find a concealed location and just wait patiently with some binoculars.
Our mate Rico has just released his second vid of a 5 part series. This clip has tracks from Tom Cosm and Civilian Sol.
White Line fever is an actioned packed snowboarding mini-series following six of New Zealand's top snowboarders on a five day campervan mission through the Southern Alps. This is Day 2 - The crew wakes to freshies at Snowpark!
Specializing in bouncing bass, sideways beats and experiments of noise, Sugarpill is a student of both the creation and delivery of polytemponic glitch. Residing in Los Angeles and living in a twisted world of sound, this young artist stays dosed to the eyelids in chopped-up samples, meticulously tweaked beats and obese waves of bass.
Sugarpill seamlessly merges his techy sensibility and production skills without ever losing the inherent importance of the beats, and this multidimensional musical approach unites EDM fans across a vast spectrum of genres and tempos. His original tracks combined with explosive live DJ sets confirm for the producer a powerful spot in the family of West Coast future sound creators. Crossing genres effortlessly and employing a rich variety of styles, his lively and intense sound is best described as a party - and that is exactly what Sugarpill brings to the dance floor.

Ghost made his debut on wax in late 2003 with the “Ghost Stories” EP. The musical journey since that release has seen Ghost navigate 3 albums (2 solo), a mix CD, numerous vinyl EP’s and singles, remix credits for the likes of The Heavy, Nicole Wills & The SoulInvestigators, Coldcut, Bonobo, Kashmere, Jehst to name a few. Ghost has received critical acclaim and support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Mr.Scruff, Gilles Peterson, Sarah Love and a host of international DJ’s across the globe. Ghost music has been played across Radio 1, BBC 6 music, 1xtra, RDU and KZSU just to name a few. Not to mention support from magazines and blogs from New Zealand, to Tokyo, San Francisco and all the way back to London. Oh, and did we mention the license deals for his albums in Japan? Ghost was runner up in the Glastonbury Unsigned Talent contest in 2007 and had a track featured on the Glastonbury compilation CD for that year. Since 2007 Ghost has been touring and DJing all over the UK and Europe (including stints at Glastonbury, Hip HopKemp, The Big Chill, Bestival and The Jazz Cafe). Following the release of his “Freedom of Thought” album in 2009 Ghost decided to have a change of scenery in 2009, travelling to South America and Thailand before deciding NZ was the place to set up the new studio.
Now enjoying life in NZ, Ghost felt it was time to bring his brand of music, wonky electronic Hip Hop beats to the people of NZ; we hope you enjoy the ride!
‘Postcards from the Edge’ is the title track and first piece of music to be lifted from Ghost’s 3rd solo studio album. The overall feel of “Postcards From the Edge” and this track is keeping with Ghost’s penchant for thoughtful, melodic music, but this is a step in a slightly different direction. Gone are the samples, in comes an orchestra of lush synths and strings, off kilter beats, sub basslines and anything else Ghost could squeeze into the mix. ‘Postcards from the Edge’ is a brooding swirling array of sounds, thoughts and emotions that gives you a taster of what’s to come on the album. A producer always willing to challenge himself musically, this marks the next stage of progression in his career. The album “Postcards from the Edge” is set to be released through Musicforheads and Border Music in August 2010. Ghost showcases a love of electronic music with nods to the dubstep, wonky future beats, electronic and of course Hip Hop scenes.
